The female side of any livestock-breeding programme has the greatest influence, and we believe the Peel Forest Maternal Sires produce the ideal breeding hind.

With the breeding hinds gradually being driven to the harder country, on either the foothills or high country, it is vitally important that the suitable hind is identified and bred to meet the challenges. It must be capable of wintering under adverse conditions by carrying good body fat cover and having the constitution to maintain body score even when under stress. Also it must be able to wean a large fawn in early March, then quickly return to an acceptable body score to conceive on the first cycle to produce another early fawn.

The sires we have selected to produce these Peel Forest Maternal Sires are hardy, with good average DBV’s for 12-month growth rate and excellent deep sturdy body conformation. Importantly they must have Johne’s resilient traits that are passed on to the breeding hind and then in turn onto their progeny. These selected sires also have powerful velvet genetics.
